Dear team,
Welcome to our weekly e-newsletter with a new title - Speaking Frankly ! As a dedicated public servant, I am proud to be a trusted and honest resource for all, and as this title emphasizes, I will always empathetically listen without judgement to any issue of concern, and speak with you frankly about how we can work together to solve problems for our region and nation.
With that in mind, this week I wanted to highlight my recent op-ed in the Northwest Indiana Times from Sunday [[link removed]] regarding race.
In order to create lasting change regarding systemic racism and injustice, we all must do more to listen to one another, understand the experiences of one another, and then together create a more just and tolerant society for all.
One of the solutions from my North Township Trustee office to create safer communities for all has been promoting the inclusion of social workers within police teams, for example, in instances involving addiction and domestic violence. While I know that the overwhelming majority of law enforcement personnel are dedicated public servants, we must continue to strive to improve their available resources and racial awareness training.
We must also discuss the vast racial disparities that exist in terms of generational wealth, quality of healthcare, environmental injustice, and other areas of our society.
We do a great disservice to our communities when we do not allow all individuals the equal opportunity to fully contribute their talents and passions. To create a growing and flourishing economy in Northwest Indiana and our nation, we must do more to provide everyone with the appropriate resources and opportunities to reach their full potential.
As the Democratic nominee for Indiana’s 1st Congressional District, I will continue to have the difficult conversations that are necessary to create lasting changes to address the injustice and inequities in our communities and provide more opportunities for access to good-paying jobs and affordable health care.
