Hi John,
Did you see Joe’s latest message? The federal shutdown is dragging on as Republicans refuse to act to keep health care affordable for millions. Connecticut’s 2nd District has more federal workers than any other district in our state, and these lost paychecks have real consequences for our friends and neighbors. And it’s all thanks to Republican inaction — they’d rather do nothing and let the government stay closed than preserve critical lifelines that allow people to afford health insurance.

Right now, thousands of federal workers across eastern Connecticut are bearing the brunt of Washington’s dysfunction. They’re protecting our coastlines, inspecting our food, and keeping our skies safe — all without a paycheck.
In a recent article, I discussed a constituent who would see her family’s health insurance increase by $37,200 per year! She told me, “that is not only unaffordable; it’s impossible for us” — and that’s true for folks across Connecticut and the nation.
That’s why I’ve deferred my own pay. If working families in our community are going without, I won’t take a dime either.
But this shutdown is just the tip of the iceberg.
Voices across the state are speaking out: if Republicans in Congress refuse to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits, health insurance premiums could spike across the board — hitting families, seniors, and small business owners hard.
People in our community are fighting back — and I’m standing with them. We need to stop this sabotage before it gets worse.
If you're with me in protecting affordable care and ending this shutdown, I hope you'll join our movement today. [[link removed]]

These tax credits aren’t handouts — they’re lifelines. Cutting them off isn’t just irresponsible — it’s immoral. I’ll keep fighting to reopen the government and protect health care access for every family in our district.
Thanks for being in this fight with me,
Joe Courtney
