John, we’re sure you’re seeing all the headlines: at least one American professor has fled to Europe due to escalating threats to his family, the National Guard has been activated to stand around in liberal-leaning cities to intimidate people, and ICE is zip-tying children outside their apartment buildings with no consequence.
This is happening while the federal government embraces surveillance technology from a company called Palantir — to the tune of millions of dollars — with contracts awarded by Congress.
But did you know that some members of Congress are personally profiting off those deals?
Palantir, among other things, offers "predictive policing" tools to “forecast crime patterns,” which means collecting as much information as possible about people and using AI to anticipate crime before it happens. That means you could be suspected of a crime for factors like where you work, your heritage or religion, or even the route you take to drive home.
And it gets worse: rather than stand up against a private company operating a nightmare surveillance state on behalf of the government, some of the people in the best position to speak out saw an opportunity to line their own pockets. Here’s an example:
April 7 and 8: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who sits on the House Committee on Homeland Security, bought stock in Palantir.
April 17th: ICE publicly announced a new $30M deal with Palantir, to track peoples’ movements and target them for deportation.
April 29: In just three weeks since her purchase, stock in Palantir rose 48%, a hefty reward. Since then, more contracts have been awarded, and the stock price is more than double what it was at the beginning of the year.
This is why it is critical for our democracy to ban congressional stock trading. When Congress no longer has a direct financial incentive to sell us out, we can make our government accountable to us, not just other wealthy shareholders.
While we wait for Congress to be back in session, we’re still hard at work to support our slate of endorsed candidates, who are all seeking to unseat notorious stock traders and their enablers. Please, help us get financial corruption out of the halls of Congress make a contribution to Ban The Trade today:
