Friend,
I was proud to join the millions of people across America and the thousands across Illinois protesting President Trump’s abuses of power at the No Kings rally in Decatur.
I was filled with hope to see folks of all stripes – young people, seniors, veterans, and families – come together to protect our democracy. The right to protest and make voices heard is a key component of what makes our country great.
It felt especially meaningful given the chaos in our politics right now – both in Washington and at home:
- The government shutdown has entered its third week, and Republicans are still unwilling to work with us to secure affordable healthcare for working families who already struggle with rising costs. Federal employees and active military are going without paychecks, and everyday people are unable to access services they rely on.
- Illinois is in the national spotlight as President Trump sends the National Guard into Chicago. This isn’t about safety, it’s a no holds barred display of power. It’s especially hypocritical after the White House canceled critical law enforcement grants – only to turn around and wield the National Guard against any community that dares to speak out.
I’m continuing to fight for IL-13 in Congress, no matter what the Trump administration and national Republicans throw at us. I’m energized by the folks I met at the rally this weekend, and I’m taking that courage back with me to keep pushing for progress.
Thank you, and let’s keep showing up together.
Nikki
