Dear friend,

What happens when the government says a popular food additive is dangerous? If you’re a powerful food industry group, you make sure the government changes course and leaves the toxic chemical on the market.

Chemical industry lobbyists are pushing for “preemption of food chemical laws” – a proposal that would block states from banning or restricting harmful food additives, even when federal regulators fail to protect us.

We have already seen the chemical industry do this for harmful pesticides in our food. They’ve backed bills that would protect pesticide companies from liability.

Now they've turned their sights toward food chemicals. This means states could lose the power to rid store shelves of toxic food additives like BPA and titanium dioxide, which remain in use, despite their known health risks:

* BPA, a hormone disruptor that may harm the immune and reproductive systems
* Titanium dioxide, linked to DNA damage and shown to accumulate in the body
* BHA and BHT, tied to cancer and endocrine disruption

When your state steps up to ban harmful food chemicals, the federal government should not get in the way.
