Hello friend,
This weekend, thousands in Hartford, New London, Willimantic, Granby, Westport, Windsor, and across our great state and nation stood together under one message: We are Americans. We want no thrones, no crowns, no kings.
From veterans, to young families, to first-generation Americans, I spoke to many in the crowds who shared the same conviction: Our democracy does not now and will never belong to one person. It belongs to all of us.
These protests were not simply a vocal moment – they were a statement of presence. And a statement of resistance. We will not be silent in the face of the creeping consolidation of power, the cessation of our typical checks and balances, or the policies that threaten what should be non-negotiable: healthcare, civil rights, and an honest and trustworthy government.
In Hartford alone, over 12,000 people turned out in a peaceful and lawful demonstration that is firmly rooted in our First Amendment right to gather. As your senator, I saw you. I heard you. And I’m doubling down on the work we must do: continuing to defend the programs that the current administration deems unnecessary, in spite of the millions of Americans who rely on them; standing up for the rule of law as this Department of Justice politicizes and weaponizes that great agency; ensuring that the phrase our nation’s founding document begins with still means something – “We the People.”
The challenge ahead of us is great, but the strength of community can be greater. While I fight on the floors of Washington, I need your help to fight in your daily lives to protect the very foundation of our democracy. Together, we can prove once again that America is strongest when its people stand united and unafraid, even in its darkest moments.
In service,
Dick
