Federal workers miss first paychecks
|
Nearly 1.4 million federal employees on furlough or working for no pay will miss paychecks this week as the federal shutdown extends into Day 21.
AFGE and AFSCME, the unions that represent federal workers, have been fighting hard for federal workers during this time, including blocking mass firings, demanding back pay, suing the Trump Administration for partisan out-of-office replies, pushing for the Federal Employees Civil Relief Act, and pressuring Congress to re-open the government immediately.
Congressional Democrats from Maryland and Virginia together with federal workers spoke last week about the impact of the shutdown in our region. And allied unions including IAM and IFPTE have spoken out in solidarity with federal workers.

Workers at DCA and Dulles demand livable wages and benefits
|
Contracted service workers with 32BJ SEIU at Dulles and DCA Airports rallied last week for livable wages and benefits.
"I have to make impossible choices every week: gas in the car or food on the table?" said MJ, a cargo agent at Dulles. "A $200 grocery bill for my growing kids or my own health insurance? We are all struggling." The airlines have no more excuses to deny contracted airport workers basic benefits. See more »

KCUAW: "This isn't stewardship. This is sabotage."
|
Since Trump appointed him in February, Kennedy Center President Ric Grenell has fired staff of social impact programming, international programming, dance and jazz programming, the Millennium stage, strategic partnerships, and more — despite the Center's website stating that "People are our most important resource and the key to our success."
"Grenell isn't 'saving' the Kennedy Center. He's tearing it apart, piece by piece — all while taking credit for events curated, cultivated, and produced by skilled arts workers who were fired without cause," said KCUAW workers.
