Hi John,
Only two days into Montana's wolf-hunting season, a beloved Yellowstone wolf from the Jackson Butte pack was killed just outside the park. The female wolf was two years old.
Her tragic death is a prime example of why the Center for Biological Diversity is in court to protect the wolves of Yellowstone and the northern Rockies.

Wolves are protected inside Yellowstone National Park. But once they cross the park’s invisible boundary, they're fair game.
For years Montana officials have sought out ways to eliminate these animals. Long the epicenter of wolf-killing in the lower 48, the state has increased the number of wolves it wants to take out in the coming months by more than one-third.
Already 25 wolves have been killed, and the season is just beginning. If the state gets its way, the tally will be more than 450.
State officials have made no secret of their desire to see a significant decline in wolves.
They let hunters use night-vision equipment to track them down and trappers use painful snares that cause intense suffering.
This latest shooting is proof that wolves in the northern Rockies need federal protection. The Center went to court to make that happen. And a federal judge recently ruled in our favor and against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The judge agreed the agency broke the law last year when it denied a petition to protect gray wolves in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and parts of other states under the Endangered Species Act.
But the fight goes on. Our promise is that we won't ever give up seeking justice for wolves — and for all vulnerable creatures.
