Meeting with our BD4 Youth Advisory Council at University High.
Dear friends and partners,
The days are getting shorter, but all of the work continues here at LAUSD. At our last Board meeting, we reviewed the newly released state standardized test scores ([link removed]) , which show historic gains and a full recovery to pre-pandemic academic levels. While we’re nowhere near where we need to be, I was excited to dig into strategies that will help maintain this trajectory and support the socioemotional needs of students.
We know that progress is due to the hard work of all stakeholders at school sites. This month, we celebrate Principal Appreciation month and uplift educators like the new County Teacher of the Year, Monika Heidi Duque, at Rosewood Magnet in Board District 4. We celebrated the partnership and hard work of parent organizations at our second annual Parent Lead Appreciation Breakfast, and we convened my Youth Advisory Council for the first time this year. Our “YAC” members strengthen leadership from within our schools and help me center students in all of my decisions.
I remain committed to serving our schools and pushing progress this fall and beyond.
Onward,

In the Community: The Latest from Board District 4
This month, my team and I joined community members and partners at events across Board District 4—from the ribbon cutting for the new CVS in the Palisades to the Venice Chamber of Commerce Mixer and the CAA Foundation’s Legislative Briefing on Wildfire Recovery Efforts. We also connected with families at Westwood Charter’s Parent Coffee, Marquez ES’s campus reopening, Marina del Rey MS’s Parent Night, and Palisades ES’s festive Yee Haw Day. We also hosted our BD4 Parent Leader Breakfast at the Skirball and our Youth Advisory Council meeting with high school students, and visited Stoner Ave ES during Operation School Bell, which provides clothing and resources to students in need. We also visited several schools across BD4, including Open Charter, Wright MS, Rosewood ES, Loyola Village ES, and 3rd St ES. Finally, it was inspiring to join Mayor Bass in celebrating “1,000 Days Until LA28,” marking the countdown to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles!
In the Spotlight: Board District 4 Student Gia Ditvi
As we reflect on an inspiring start to the school year, we’re revisiting some of the standout moments that set the tone for a great year ahead—including Gia Ditvi’s incredible performance at the LAUSD Opening of Schools event. Gia, a 4th grader at Woodland Hills Elementary Charter for Enriched Studies, impressed everyone with her creativity, confidence, and infectious energy. Watch Gia’s performance below:
