Dear Democrats,
Leaving summer and heading into fall, New Mexico Democrats have been busy! We’ve been on the road and in the communities and consolidating our strength. With our Rising Star Gala, a Special Legislative Session, and speaking out against the Republican's government shutdown - Democrats have gotten to work moving our Party into the future.
Rising Star Gala
DPNM’s Rising Star Gala was an outstanding success! We were thrilled to honor our 2025 Rising Stars:
NM Representative Yanira Gurrola
NM Senator Leo Jaramillo
NM Representative Michelle Paulene Abeyta .
The crowd was also inspired by special guests TN State Rep. Justin Jones and US Rep. Becca Balint.

No Kings Day Rallies Across NM
This past Saturday, New Mexican communities large and small, rural and urban, put our 1st Amendment rights to work and sent the message that wannabe kings don’t belong in America. Stay tuned - we'll be releasing a special edition of the DPNM Update in the coming days focusing on many of the roughly 30 No Kings rallies that took place across New Mexico!

Message from the Vice Chair:
“As a young man, I understand the necessity of meeting young people where they are. That’s why I was proud to work with so many other young people to hold a town hall on the campus of the University of New Mexico. Whether it’s listening to their concerns about affordable housing, dealing with student debt, or the ability to find a decent paying job upon graduation, I wanted the people of UNM to know that the Democratic Party is here to validate and do something about their priorities. I look forward to holding more town halls across college campuses in the future!”

In the News
By instigating this government shutdown, Donald Trump and the GOP will take away healthcare and jobs from millions. The impacts to New Mexico alone will be devastating. But he doesn't care if you have a job or healthcare.
Never before has America had a president who delights in punishing the people he serves, but we're not dealing with a well-intentioned executive. We're dealing with a deranged, criminally-convicted cry-baby and a spineless parade of hypocrites who yield to him, resigned to overlook his attacks on the Constitution and democracy, associations with Epstein, and intentionally hurting fellow Americans. History will know Trump for being divisive and pathetic, but in the meantime, it's up to all of us to speak out.

The Republican excuse for shutting down the government is based on a downright lie. Day after day, Trump Press Secretary Karoline "Lyin" Leavitt tries to blame th e GOP shutdown on undocumented immigrants, yet poll after poll shows the American people aren't buying it. Republicans control the presidency, the House and the Senate-their lies don't add up, and public opinion polling overwhelmingly agrees [[link removed]] .
The truth is that Republicans refuse to extend ACA tax credits that 24 million American citizens rely on for healthcare - undocumented immigrants aren't getting these tax credits and can't even enroll in the ACA to begin with.
Trump and Republicans are using the shutdown as excuse to carry out their Project 2025 plans of gutting federal agencies and critical services. They're even threatening to withhold backpay and permanently eliminate the jobs of furloughed workers. While thousands suffer because of the GOP shutdown, mortgage payments, utility bills, and childcare costs continue.

As congressional Republicans and Trump betray American families, New Mexico Democrats got to work to protect your healthcare, food assistance, freedom of the press, and more. While families across the country are facing tough times paying the bills because of the worst federal economic policies of our lifetimes, NM Democrats are helping to ease the burden.
Early childhood education is a constitutional right in New Mexico after years of work by policymakers and advocates. While free childcare has been in place for most families for years in NM, thanks to Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, now no-cost universal childcare is available to every New Mexican family, regardless of income. Now no family in New Mexico will have to choose working to put food on the table over making sure their children are cared for.

In the special session earlier this month, state Democrats stepped up where national Republicans failed, protecting healthcare, food assistance, and vaccine access for children while improving public safety. In just two days, our state legislature showed what public service is supposed to look like – using public office to help people and improve lives in real, meaningful ways. Donald Trump and congressional Republicans should take note.
While Donald Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ directly attacks healthcare and other critical services, particularly in rural New Mexico, years of responsible budgeting with record revenues have enabled state Democrats to help New Mexicans when we need it the most. The Democratic Party of New Mexico could not be more proud of Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham for proactively calling this special session and both chambers of our legislature for protecting New Mexicans while national Republicans betray every American who isn’t a billionaire.

For yet another month, the Trump International Trade War is hurting small family-owned businesses who are forced to raise prices to keep the lights on. Tariffs are forcing large & small businesses to pass cost increases on to consumers, who are already dealing with inflation & a tough job market, especially right here in New Mexico.
Meanwhile with the Trump administration's restricting of the press, the unconstitutional racial profiling of ICE, and threatening retribution on peaceful protestors - constitutional values and protections are being bent and broken like never before.
The Trump Administration is trying to make an America where their narrative is the only one allowed and racial profiling is the norm. The US Constitution is not and never has been a partisan concept, and Trump can’t be allowed to be the hyper-partisan arbiter of what the press or even individuals can or can’t say. Republicans and the press need the courage to stand up in defense of freedom of the press, free speech and our most fundamental and core American principals outlined in the Constitution. Which is why DPNM celebrated Constitution Day on September 17th.

Team DPNM highlight
In response to the Trump Administration’s unprecedented attacks on the First Amendment rights of free speech and freedom of the press, DPNM reached out to the Libertarian Party of New Mexico to issue an unprecedented joint statement in defense of Americans' constitutional rights. Republicans claim to care about the Constitution, but fail to condemn the Trump Administration’s attacks on Americans’ fundamental rights.
DPNM and the Libertarian Party of New Mexico certainly have some disagreements on substantive issues, but being able to have these disagreements underscores what makes our country so great. Our parties are in strong agreement that Americans need to speak out as our most fundamental freedoms are under attack like never before.

PS: Expanded early voting is underway in municipal elections across New Mexico. These races may not technically be partisan, but the people we elect to local office still have a tremendous impact on day-to-day life.
