Folks,

Over my career, I’ve taken many oaths to protect our country and Constitution. Whether as a member of the Armed Forces or a member of Congress, I’ll always fight for our democracy.

As a paratrooper who led an infantry platoon in Iraq, I often think about the brave individuals who fought with me for our country. Paratroopers have a tradition — the leader of the unit jumps out of the plane first. Then others follow.

I’m ready to jump.

When I think of the best of America, I think of the paratroopers I served alongside. We were a multiracial and multiethnic group of soldiers — some from farms, others from cities, some from the east coast, others from the west coast, some who were raised in the north while others grew up in the south.

Yet despite our vastly different backgrounds, we served together, fought together, had each other's backs, and found great strength in each other as soldiers and as Americans.

We're strongest when we stand together. Over the weekend, millions of Americans gathered to protest the Trump administration's authoritarian agenda — a reminder that American democracy is not inevitable. It’s only as strong as the people willing to come together and stand up to fight for it.
