HHSC Encourages Healthy Activities During Inaugural Unplug Texas Day
AUSTIN – The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is observing Unplug Texas Day by encouraging Texans to disconnect from their electronic devices and take part in healthy activities with family and friends.
“Taking a break from our screens on Unplug Texas Day and throughout the year is a great opportunity to reconnect with each other,” said Crystal Starkey, deputy executive commissioner of HHSC Family Health Services. “All of us need a healthy reminder to plug into real life.”
The 89th Texas Legislature designated Oct. 21 as Unplug Texas Day to highlight the importance of taking breaks from digital technology and engaging in more direct, personal experiences that support social connections and well-being.
“I authored Senate Bill 2232, creating Unplug Texas Day, because sometimes the best way to recharge is to disconnect,” said State Sen. Adam Hinojosa of Corpus Christi. “Our mental and physical health both benefit when we step away from screens and spend time with our families and communities. Unplug Texas Day encourages Texans to put down their phones, be present and focus on what truly matters. By doing so, we strengthen ourselves and the communities that make our state so special.”
HHSC has an array of resources to help people connect without using their devices:
