Hi there,
Democrats in the Arizona House of Representatives say they feel unsafe around one of their Republican colleagues.
That's not hyperbole. That's not partisan exaggeration. That's the reality when a lawmaker calls for a sitting congresswoman to be "tried, convicted, and hanged" — and his party's leadership refuses to condemn it.
State Rep. John Gillette, publicly stated that Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal should be executed for organizing nonviolent resistance training. When called out, he doubled down, saying she should face a firing squad instead.
Let's be clear: Jayapal was teaching people about labor strikes and peaceful protests. Gillette responded by calling for her death.
Arizona's Democratic state representatives wrote to Republican House leaders demanding accountability. Their response? Silence.
House Speaker Steve Montenegro won't comment. Ethics Committee Chair Lupe Diaz won't take action. Arizona Republicans are betting they can ignore calls for political violence without consequences.
They're wrong.
Will you support our fight for accountability for dangerous rhetoric that threatens public servants and erodes democratic norms?
Arizona deserves leaders who condemn threats against public servants regardless of party. Right now, we're getting Republican leadership that enables extremism and looks the other way when their own members threaten violence.
We're not letting this slide. And we're making sure Arizona voters know exactly who's protecting extremists instead of condemning them.
Thanks for standing with us,
Arizona Democratic Party
