John,

Here at CREW, our mission is to hold our government accountable to the American people and protect the democratic institutions on which we all rely.

That’s why CREW sues the Trump administration when it abuses its power, undermines the rule of law and disregards the checks and balances designed to keep government officials in line.

If you are already aware of the bold legal actions we’ve taken so far this year, please consider making a one-time donation or a monthly recurring donation to help sustain CREW’s work. If you need to learn a little bit more, we’ll go into details about some of our cases below →

This year, we’ve taken on some of the Trump administration’s most brazen attacks on transparency and accountability.

Early on, we sued the so-called “Department of Government Efficiency,” which was running major government functions behind closed doors. In February, we went to court to force DOGE to keep and release its records—and by March, the court agreed. The following month, we secured discovery, including sworn testimony and documents from DOGE and Acting Administrator Amy Gleason. When the Trump administration tried to block those transparency requirements, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously, with judges from both parties, rejected their arguments and ordered DOGE to comply.

We’ve also pressed for answers from other agencies tied to DOGE’s operations, suing the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Department of Education, Social Security Administration and the VA for withholding related records. But DOGE isn’t the only entity we’re holding accountable…

In May, we filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission on behalf of two Wisconsin voters after the Trump campaign appeared to exploit a loophole to hide key donor information during the 2024 election. That loophole violates federal campaign finance law and we’re determined to see it closed once and for all.

Around the same time, we sued the CDC over RFK Jr.’s decision to shut down the agency’s FOIA office—a move that cut off public access to information about the agency’s work even as preventable diseases are on the rise. Americans deserve transparency in public health, not more secrecy. Although a judge denied our motion for a preliminary injunction, the court recognized the seriousness of our claims and should soon decide whether the administration’s actions violated the law.

We forced the Office of Management and Budget to bring back a website that showed how federal money is distributed across agencies. It might sound technical, but it’s critical: that apportionment data reveals how billions in taxpayer dollars are spent.

Most recently, we announced a new lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s creation of sweeping databases that consolidate sensitive personal information across federal agencies—violating both the Privacy Act of 1974 and the Constitution. As part of that lawsuit, we sought emergency relief on behalf of the League of Women Voters to stop the administration’s use of those secret databases to purge voter rolls and silence Americans ahead of this fall’s election.

John, this seems like a lot, but this is just a short look into some of the work we are doing at CREW to hold the Trump administration accountable. These legal fights are complex and resource-intensive—but they’re necessary and we need your support to continue this work.
