John,

The federal government is shut down and real people are paying the price. Thousands of federal employees are furloughed, critical services are delayed, and families across the country are feeling the impact. Color Of Change lays the blame squarely where it belongs. The Trump administration and Congressional Republicans have chosen to shut down the government rather than protect Americans from an increase of 75%—or higher in their healthcare costs —a hike that could spell financial disaster for millions, especially in Black communities.

Color Of Change commends Democrats for holding firm against a Republican budget that will further hurt the American people.

Republicans have an opportunity to fix the harm they caused with the Big Ugly Bill by extending the life-saving tax credits that lower the cost of health care. Instead, they’re pushing a budget that deepens those cuts — slashing Medicare and refusing to protect families from rising costs, all while preserving handouts for corporations and billionaires.

Email your lawmakers today to tell them to hold the line against Trump’s disastrous budget and protect healthcare access for millions of Americans!

Why is Color Of Change urging Congressional Democrats to hold the line?

We can’t negotiate with neo-segregationists. A government shutdown hurts, but a budget that deliberately and perpetually locks Black people out of opportunity is not a compromise we can accept. Millions will pay the price. For example, an additional 14.2 million people nationwide could be uninsured by 2034 due to the budget reconciliation package and the expiration of ACA enhanced tax credits — including 500,000 in Georgia and 1.4 million in Texas.

The Republican majority says they’ll negotiate later if they can just get the government reopened now. But we don’t have until later — key tax credits that help working families are set to expire on December 31, 2025. We need to act now.

Let's be clear: agreeing to open the government without a deal forfeits our only leverage. There is no reason to believe the other side will negotiate once the pressure is off. The only path forward is to stand firm.

Rather than serving the American people and negotiating in good faith with Democrats, the Republicans have chosen to decimate our government — and our communities to continue their harmful policies. Color Of Change is urging Democrats to hold the line and ensure millions of people will be able to afford healthcare. Will you stand with us?
