Hi John,
As you know, we’ve been urging legislators to do more to protect private well owners' access to safe drinking water. Too many Wisconsinites are facing threats from bacteria, nitrate, PFAS, lead, arsenic, oil pipelines, and more. Thanks to your advocacy, I have an exciting update!
Today, a bipartisan group of legislators introduced the bill LRB 4367. This bill would protect private well owners’ right to know about potential water contamination. It would require the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to notify county health departments, county land and water conservation departments, and Tribal health departments if they have identified nearby contamination. This then gives them the tools they need to notify impacted people.
Take action now and ask your legislators to co-sponsor this bill >>>
Unlike Wisconsinites on municipal water systems who get annual notifications about their water quality, private well owners are rarely notified when local groundwater is contaminated. We need a better system for protecting private well owners’ right to know about potential contamination.
The health of Wisconsin families depends on it.
There’s a lot we need to do to build momentum behind this legislation and ensure our elected officials send it to Gov. Evers for his signature. The first step: we want as many legislators as possible to co-sponsor this legislation.
Will you email your legislators and ask them to add their name to the bill? The more widespread support we can show for this legislation, the better shot we have at getting it across the finish line.
