Two CIS writers -- board member Phillip Linderman and fellow Andrew R. Arthur -- had the lead articles on the same day last week in the influential news aggregators RealClearPolitics and RealClearPolicy (excerpts and links below).
Commentary
Published in Real Clear Policy:
What Makes Us America ([link removed])
Andrew R. Arthur, October 14, 2025
Excerpt: One thing we all can agree on is there are strong disagreements over immigration, with one side decrying any ICE enforcement and the other demanding more removals and fewer new arrivals. Most in the latter camp probably don’t realize that the issue for the other side has more to do with the very legitimacy of the United States than it does with allowing those “seeking a better life” to remain, as a very wise woman predicted more than 30 years ago in a landmark op-ed.

Published in The American Conservative:
Trump’s Pressure on Sanctuary Cities Is Working ([link removed])
By Phillip Linderman, October 15, 2025
Excerpt: After the U.S. southern frontier was secured, open-border advocates next asserted that the Trump administration would never succeed in forcing out Biden’s millions of unlawful immigrants. It was another version of the same mantra: forget the rule of law and embrace America’s banana republic status; after all, the country needs the migrants, regardless how they arrived. It is a continuation of the left’s longstanding campaign to erase the distinction between legal and illegal immigration.

Published in National Review:
The Media’s Narrative-Serving Redefinition of ‘Illegal Immigrant’ ([link removed])
By Jason Richwine, October 15, 2025
Excerpt: Remember when Vice President Kamala Harris was the Biden administration’s border czar, but then the role became politically inconvenient while she was running for president, and so the media decided that it had never happened? Now another immigration-related retcon may be upon us.

Published in The Washington Examiner:
Widespread ‘fact-checker’ failure on public health benefits for illegal immigrants ([link removed])
By Jason Richwine, October 13, 2025
Excerpt: In trying to win the public relations battle over the shutdown, Republicans have argued that the Democrats’ budget would grant health benefits to illegal immigrants. “That’s false,” NPR says. “This is false,” according to the Associated Press. “False,” declares Snopes.

‘Sanctuary’ Policies Are at the Heart of L.A., Chicago, Portland Stand-Offs ([link removed])
By Andrew R. Arthur
Rather than the fabled “laboratories for democracy”, sanctuary jurisdictions are increasingly more like the meth labs of democracy, with state and local elected officials getting politically high on their own sanctimony.
