Dear friend,
As a Reverend, I have spent many years walking alongside people through illness,
dying and grief. And as a daughter, I have witnessed the unbearable suffering of
someone I loved deeply.
It is from both my faith and that experience that I believe in compassion,
choice and dignity at the end of life.
Now, as the assisted dying Bill reaches a crucial stage in the House of Lords,
we face a significant challenge. The new Archbishop of Canterbury has said she
is prepared to table an amendment so the Lords can vote down the Bill. Bishops
in the Lords are prepared to do everything in their power to block the Bill
entirely. We cannot let unelected Bishops, who don’t speak for the majority of
their church, let alone the majority of the public, be the reason this Bill
falls.
Joining Dignity in Dying as a member will power the movement holding the
Bishops, and the whole House of Lords, accountable. Will you join today?

This is not just about assisted dying, it’s about who gets to decide. I say, as
a Reverent Canon in their church, that we must do all we can to make sure the
Bishops are dissuaded from using their power to vote down this Bill. We must
stand up for dying people, and for democracy itself.
If you, like me, believe that decisions about dying should be made by the
people, please become a member of Dignity in Dying today.
Your membership will help us stand up to those who want to block this vital
change and make sure the voices of dying people are heard in Parliament.

My mum died of pancreatic cancer. She was a woman of strong faith, and in her
final days she asked me to promise she wouldn’t have to suffer. I couldn’t keep
that promise. No one should have to watch someone they love endure such pain -
that experience will stay with me forever.
Together, we can stand for dying people, for compassion, and for democracy.
With faith and determination,
Reverend Canon Val Plumb
On behalf of Dignity in Dying
