The Morning Routine in America
People in every community should be able to go to school, go to the park, go to festivals, walk their streets — basically live their lives — without fearing gun violence. But that’s not the reality we live in. A new poll by the American Psychological Association (APA) found that a third of Americans fear mass shootings, even changing their routines and going out of their way to avoid certain places in order to feel safe. We can't let this be our America. We cannot allow this to become the new normal.
Enough is enough.
We can’t let this become our morning routine.

New Report on the Ripple Effects of Mass Shootings

Victory! House Committee Will Return From Recess Early to Tackle Gun Safety
Members of the House are listening to voters! Last week, the House Judiciary Committee announced it’s cutting its recess break short to return to Washington, D.C., to work on gun safety legislation. Members will meet on September 4 to mark up lifesaving bills that are part of Brady’s comprehensive plan, including a ban on high-capacity magazines and legislation supporting extreme risk orders. This is PROGRESS! We’ll need to fill the room to show our support for common-sense gun safety. Help us pack the room! Sign up to join us on September 4!

Brady President Kris Brown Testifies for Gun Reform in Virginia
We’re continuing to fight hard for common-sense gun reform in Virginia. On Tuesday, Brady President Kris Brown testified before the Virginia Crime Commission in support of gun safety legislation proposed in the wake of the Virginia Beach mass shooting. Kris demanded that the legislature vote on lifesaving bills to expand background checks, ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and implement an extreme risk law. Last month, Brady helped organize about 1,000 gun safety advocates to rally at the State Capitol in support of gun reform. Election Day is coming, and we won’t be letting up in the fight for a safer Virginia. Read more about the hearing.
We’re Proud to Endorse Mark Kelly for U.S. Senate Race
It’s not every day an organization has the honor of endorsing someone who embodies our nation's ideals. Mark Kelly is a patriot, an astronaut, a U.S. Navy captain, and a gun safety champion. He’s worked alongside his wife, former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), to change the laws and culture around easy access to guns. We know that Kelly will be a champion for gun safety and will fight for Arizonians and Americans across the country. Read more about our endorsement in The Hill.
New York’s Extreme Risk Law Takes Effect Today!
Today, New York state’s Extreme Risk Protective Order (ERPO) law goes into effect. This critical measure will save lives by allowing certain authorities to temporarily remove access to guns from people who pose a threat to themselves or others. Just this week, a study by the Violence Prevention Research Program at the UC Davis School of Medicine provided further proof that extreme risk laws are highly effective in preventing gun violence. At a time when Americans everywhere are looking for real leadership to advance solutions we know will prevent gun violence, we applaud the New York legislature and grassroots networks for getting this bill passed, and we look forward to an implementation program to ensure it’s used to its full potential. Brady Legal Defends Colorado’s Ban on High-Capacity Magazines
High-capacity magazines — which are designed to kill a large number of people in a short amount of time — are used in some of the deadliest mass shootings in America, including the recent tragedies in Dayton and El Paso. As Brady fights to ban high-capacity magazines at the federal level, we’re also working to limit their use in states across the country. This week, we took action in the Colorado Supreme Court, where a gun rights group is challenging the state’s ban on high-capacity magazines. We filed an amicus brief attesting to the constitutionality of the law, which was passed in 2013 in the wake of the Aurora theater shooting. Read more.
Gun Violence Prevention (GVP) Hero of the Week
This week, the Alameda County (CA) District Attorney released a report with six years of data on gun use, including guns used in local crimes. This kind of data — which we rarely see — is invaluable, and we can't end gun violence without it. Send a tweet applauding Alameda for its transparency, which we hope to see from DA offices across the country.

“I want to applaud March for Our Lives for releasing the Peace Plan. I think it's really important for us in the movement to say what the North Star is.”
