Here’s a fun fact: I spent six years as a Girl Scout troop leader for my daughter’s troop!
You may be wondering, “Okay? What does that have to do with being a member of Congress?”
I learned a lot from working with and leading my troop. I learned about people skills, communication, and conflict resolution. More importantly, as their leader, I knew I needed to create a space for all of my kiddos to thrive and feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and questions. My job was to guide and mentor them so they could grow their confidence, self-esteem, and leadership abilities.
Being a good leader is not about dictating or ordering, it's about listening. The only way to help those girls grow into the strong young women they are today was to take the time to hear their anxieties, develop their strengths, and stand shoulder to shoulder with them as they navigated the ups and downs of their lives.
I’ve had enough of leaders who try to dictate to us what we need – instead of shutting their mouths and listening. Leaders should respond to the people they represent. Leaders have a responsibility to be present, collaborative, and try to solve problems.
It’s time MI-04 had a Congressperson who understands what real leadership is about. Would you make a contribution to my campaign right now so we can bring real leadership back to MI-04?
Thank you,
Jessica
