Unquiet Utes on exhibit in Capitol Gallery [ [link removed] ]

Unquiet Utes
Capitol Gallery

The Unquiet Utes, a traveling exhibit from the Campbell County Rockpile Museum in Gillette, is now on exhibit in the Capitol Gallery.
The exhibit chronicles the journey of approximately 400 Ute Indians who left Utah’s Uintah Reservation in 1906, as they traversed Wyoming to South Dakota. Driven by frustration over land allocation and the harsh 1905-1906 winter, the Utes sought a new home free from government intervention. Collier’s Weekly sent photographer Thomas W. Tolman to Gillette to document the Utes and their meeting with the U.S. Cavalry. The exhibit showcases Tolman's photographs alongside Ute artifacts from the State Museum.
The Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Wyoming Semiquincentennial Planning Task Force

The Wyoming State Museum is pleased to announce a new traveling exhibit through a partnership with the Smithsonian Institute Museum on Main Street program.
“Voices and Votes: Democracy in America” explores the action, reaction, vision, and revision that democracy demands as Americans continue to question how to shape the country. From the revolution and suffrage, to civil rights and casting ballots, everyone in every community is part of this ever-evolving story—the story of democracy in America.
“Voices and Votes” features historical and contemporary photos; educational and archival video; engaging multimedia interactives with short games; and historical objects like campaign souvenirs, voter memorabilia, and protest material. The exhibit will tour six Wyoming cultural institutions between April 18, 2026, and March 31, 2027.
Funding for this initiative was awarded to the Wyoming State Museum by the Wyoming Semiquincentennial Planning Task Force. The Wyoming State Museum, part of the Wyoming Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources, is working alongside partners statewide to plan and support Semiquincentennial events and initiatives. “Voices and Votes: Democracy in America” is based on an exhibition by the National Museum of American History. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress.
