I had to reach out because, right now, the National Federation of Federal Employees union president is calling out Trump’s illegal firings of federal employees during the government shutdown, and I'm 💯 with them.
If you already know the stakes, you can add your name now to my petition to stand with federal workers. Otherwise, please let me explain what's happening:
First, before the shutdown: Trump issued two executive orders that stripped collective bargaining from federal workers.
We're talking food inspectors. Veterans' health care workers. Scientists at NASA and The Weather Service. The folks we don't always think about, but who keep this country running.
That's union-busting. Straight up. I wasn't going to let that stand.
So I immediately introduced the Protect America's Workforce Act to repeal Trump's executive orders and restore collective bargaining rights.
But now, during the shutdown: While there are 1.4 million federal workers furloughed or working without pay, Trump is gleefully adding to the chaos by recklessly firing hundreds of additional federal workers.
In a late-night firing spree, Trump gutted teams at the CDC that investigate infectious disease outbreaks and protect public health.
And folks in the Department of Education say the latest round of layoffs have *decimated* the office that handles special education programs serving millions of kids and adults with disabilities.
Trump and his administration are trying to divide and conquer. They're trying to strip the government for parts to sell off to their rich buddies and consolidate power for themselves.
But they don't know who they're messing with.
And if we all band together, we can give federal workers the support they need to stand up and fight back.
PA's got more than 60,000 federal workers alone. I'm in their corner. But I need you in this fight, friend.
I'm gathering 30,000 signatures by midnight to show federal workers that we've got their backs.
