Dear Friend,

This week, while Republicans were on vacation, I was in Washington fighting to reopen the government and lower Americans' healthcare costs. Americans are already beginning to receive notices saying their health insurance premiums will increase. With the rising price of gas, groceries, and other everyday expenses, health insurance cannot be another strain on the American people. I’m fighting for you and your healthcare, and I refuse to let President Trump use the shutdown to play political games.

Democrats are Fighting to Lower Healthcare Costs

Americans across the country are starting to get notices that their health insurance premiums are soaring. In New Jersey, those covered by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace will receive a notice by November 1st that their premiums will increase and subsidies will be reduced.

This is unacceptable and will have real impacts on working families here in South Jersey and across the nation. A married couple that makes $85,000 per year currently may pay about $8,000 for their health insurance coverage throughout a 12-month period. That is already far too expensive. But that couple could now see their premiums increase to $24,000 a year.

Trump and Republicans in Congress would rather shut the government down than lower your healthcare costs. Democrats are not backing down from this fight.

Trump Using Federal Workers as Political Pawns

To make matters even worse with this government shutdown, President Trump and his cronies are now illegally firing federal employees who help keep our nation running, including staff at a key mental health agency, and workers at the Department of Education. These actions will hurt those fighting mental illness and substance use disorder, as well as students, teachers, and communities across the country.

A federal judge has now ordered the Trump administration to immediately halt the mass firing of federal employees during this shutdown, siding with two labor unions that challenged the illegal action. I’m fighting back every way we can, and the recent court ruling proved what we’ve said all along: the Trump administration’s actions are illegal. I stand with the hard-working public servants and the unions who represent them. These workers serve the American people, and they are essential.

Government Shutdown Resources

To help you navigate the government shutdown, my office has created a webpage that provides answers to some of the most common questions I have received from constituents. Due to the Trump Administration’s lack of transparency, the resources are subject to change, but we will continue to update this website as we learn more.

My office will remain open during the Republican shutdown. Please do not hesitate to call my office at 856-427-7000 with any questions or for assistance with a federal agency. To access the Republican shutdown resources webpage, click here.
