Some of the more memorable photographs of wildlife at National Geographic have been taken by Beverly Joubert. Along with her husband Dereck, who is also an Explorer at Large, Beverly has worked for decades to win over hearts and minds through images.
Now the Jouberts are out with a gorgeous new book, Wild Eye: A Life in Photographs, which features selections from more than 40 years of work. We caught up with the Jouberts and asked them for advice on how to take great wildlife photography, how the artform has changed, and what they see on the ground in nature.

“A big danger within natural history and wildlife photography,” explains Dereck, “is that most people think that you are just capturing images. The lion's walking left to right, so you're going to capture that moment. But there's so much more within the toolbox of technique that you can use to capture it well or poorly.” |

National Geographic spent a season on the rodeo circuit in the ‘90s, diving into the secret world of the cowboys who risk their lives for the love of the sport. Not many spectators know what goes on behind the chutes, because out front is where the action is. But these photos capture the danger, adrenaline, excitement, and intimacy of rodeo life—where gory injuries are common, cheers from crowds are energizing, and friends become family.
