RECLAIM Act passed
in House as part
of infrastructure bill

The RECLAIM Act, which would provide $1 billion to clean up abandoned mines and create thousands of jobs in economically depressed coal country, passed in the House last week as part of a major infrastructure bill.

The legislation is one of several bills CCL volunteers lobbied for as a supporting ask in meetings with congressional offices since June 2019

"A broad coalition has been working to advance the RECLAIM Act,” said CCL Senior Director of Government Affairs Ben Pendergrass. “Two weeks ago, CCL volunteers took a message of support for the bill to Congress and, along with others in the coalition, helped push this over the finish line in the House."

You can read more about our history with the RECLAIM Act in our latest blog post.

Other news this week:

Monthly Calling Campaign resumes: CCL’s Monthly Calling Campaign was designed to provide a steady drumbeat of calls to congressional offices for climate action. The program was curtailed the past few months as Congress grappled with the health and economic crises. But now, Congress is showing it is ready to deal with other issues, so we encourage you to resume calling! If you are not yet part of a Monthly Calling Campaign, you can sign up today. You’ll receive a script and phone numbers to call once per month in your inbox.

Take action this week

If you have a little time: Think of someone you know who is conservative or leans right of center politically, and invite them to join you at CCL’s July 11 national meeting this Saturday. If they’re interested, you could also invite them to attend your next virtual chapter meeting.

If you have more time: Join this upcoming webinar with TV meteorologist Bob Lindmeier on the evening of July 15. Bob will share how best to communicate with TV and radio station meteorologists and staff. The webinar is hosted by CCL’s Meteorologist Outreach Action Team, which trains volunteers to engage meteorologists in climate advocacy in their local companies and communities. Learn more and RSVP here.

You can also connect with your nearest CCL chapter to take action in your community, or join one of CCL’s national online Action Teams to take action on specific topics like agriculture, health, faith, and more.

Lobbying: Huge wave of messages to Congress

Letters to members of Congress send a message, literally, that an issue like climate change should be prioritized. The timing of letters is also important. That’s why we made “writing to Congress” one of our June actions, which maximized the impact of our lobby meetings.

The response was amazing. During the week starting June 12, our volunteers wrote seven times the number of letters usually written in a typical week. Year to date, CCL volunteers have sent 15,419 letters to Congress. Feeling inspired? Check out our easy-to-use action tool for writing to Congress.

CCL volunteers are regularly activating the “five levers” of political will in their communities. If you’d like to learn more about how to pull the lobbying lever like these volunteers did, browse through these trainings on contacting members of Congress.
