Announcing the 2020 Giving Project Grant Recipients and Cohort Participants
* Here are the Summer 2020 HFJ Community Innovation Grant Recipients
* Events, Calls to Action, and Resources from our Grantee Community

We gave 14 Minnesota-based grassroots organizations Giving Project grants. A 19-member Giving Project Program volunteer cohort made the general operating investments possible.

The cohort started meeting at the Headwaters office starting in January 2020. Given concerns about the coronavirus, they moved to online meetings —a major program shift. They built the first-ever Giving Project virtual community at Headwaters, developing a shared understanding of race, class, and societal power through workshops and trainings. Participants then made a personally meaningful gift while they raised money from their friends and families. They used that money to support organizations committed to social change:

Grantee organizations are led by and serve Black people, Indigenous people, and people of color. Each one excels at bringing people together to build power; and working for justice and equity. They are on the front lines of making real, lasting change across Minnesota.

Participants of the 2020 Giving Project cohort are: Donte Curtis, Mia Divecha, Wayne Ducheneaux, Graham Earley, Joy Elizabeth, Alice Geglio, Jillian Gross Fortgang, Sarah Gruidl, Zach Johnson, Jouapag Lee, Maria Lee, Nimisha Nagalia, Kia Pankey, Tahnee Trenberth, David Wang, Kabao Xiong, Serena Xiong, Xia Xiong, and Maishia Yang.

We will share details about how people can apply for a spot in the 2021 Giving Project cohort <[link removed]> and how organizations can apply for a 2021 Giving Project grant <[link removed]> later this year. Please visit the program pages on our website for updates starting in late 2020 for both opportunities.

Events, Calls to Action, and Resources from the HFJ Grantee Community

Apply to be a Poder Fellow <[link removed]>

Poder Fellows 2020 is an immersive paid fellowship for Latinx young adults who want to develop skills and experience to start or continue community organizing, build political power in the 2020 elections, and advance immigration, education, and environmental justice in Minnesota.

Poder Fellows gives you the support you need to become an organizer. Unidos MN is building a team of motivated, resilient, dedicated Latinx young adults to work on the 2020 general elections, build relationships, and win big policies in the 2021 Legislative session. No formal or prior experience in organizing is needed; bring your passion and they’ll provide the tools and support: relational organizing, run effective meetings, lead community-centered research, voter registration, and turnout, learn power mapping, gain experience in base-building and mobilization, and advance public policy through a race, class, gender & sexuality lens.

ReleaseMN8 Anti-Deportation Workshop <[link removed]>

Saturday, July 11th starting at 3 p.m.
Free and open to the public

Are you or your loved one facing possible detention or deportation due to a prior conviction? Back in 2016, we were too. Several of us came together because our husbands, brothers, sons, and uncles were facing deportation to Cambodia. We formed ReleaseMN8 to fight to bring them home.
After months of legal cases, organizing, and advocacy, three of our loved ones were released back to their families, while five of our dear brothers were deported. While we can’t guarantee success, we can help you learn some tools and strategies to fight your case.

Please join ReleaseMN8 and the Southeast Asian Anti-Deportation Strategy Team for a workshop on fighting back when at risk of deportation on Facebook Live.

Fund Our Communities—Not Cops <[link removed]>

Tuesday, July 14th starting at 6 p.m.

Wednesday, July 22nd starting at 10 a.m.

We need to protect and fund the things that really keep us safe - affordable housing, mental health services, youth programming and more. Minneapolis has to revise its budget due to COVID19 costs and needs to make cuts to the City's 2020 budget - we know a department that needs its budget slashed. Minneapolis must continue to fund the things that our communities need most!
Join Reclaim the Block and Black Visions Collective in demanding that City Council make cuts to MPD's budget in their 2020 Revised Budget Public Hearings.
The City Council will hold two meetings with public comment - Tuesday, July 14th at 6PM and Wednesday July 22nd at 10AM.
In the midst of a pandemic and an economic crisis, it’s more critical than ever to fully fund affordable housing, healthcare, real solutions to violence, and addiction services. As our communities are experiencing widespread housing and job insecurity, rising rates of domestic violence, and healthcare systems pushed to a breaking point, we can’t afford to keep pouring resources into an unaccountable police department.

This event will be updated with more information about how to attend the public meetings, talking points, and opportunities to submit comments.
