We’re proud to share Project SPARK (Studying Protective And RisK factors) — a groundbreaking new study by us at Trevor following 1,689 LGBTQ+ young people across the U.S. over five waves of research.
This first-year report tracks the mental health, well-being, and lived experiences of youth ages 13–24, offering one of the most comprehensive portraits of what LGBTQ+ young people are facing today.
The findings are striking. Reports of anxiety and depression are on the rise, with many youth experiencing discrimination, economic hardship, and barriers to care.
Exposure to conversion therapy also increased significantly during the study’s first year.
At the same time, the data underscores the conclusion that affirmation and support save lives. LGBTQ+ young people who had supportive families, affirming schools, and access to inclusive care were far less likely to report depression or suicidal thoughts.
As advocates, supporters, and allies, it’s our duty to stay informed — and to turn that knowledge into action to help LGBTQ+ young people feel loved, understood, and, most importantly, to survive.
