Today’s Saturday Column is UNLOCKED for all subscribers!

In honor of the Dodgers clinching the National League Pennant, and returning to the World Series (can they pull off a back-to-back thing?) — this issue is open to all subscribers. Typically this feature is behind our paywall. Enjoy. This is what you are missing basically very Saturday if you haven’t bumped up. Of course you can upgrade to a paid membership now. It’s not much.

(I sent this to paid subscribers this morning, hopefully I have figured out how to send to the rest of the list without sending it to those nice people a second time.)

What am I reading?

IS CALIFORNIA REALLY A DONOR STATE?

My good friend Jon Coupal, a subject of one our California Patriot Profiles, in this column, takes on the idea that California is a “donor state,” dissecting claims made by Governor Newsom and economists alike. He argues that the real issue isn’t whether the state “loses” money — it’s how responsibly that money is managed. His expert take challenges common fiscal assumptions with sharp analysis.

LAIST: HOW PROP 50 COULD SLICE AND DICE REPUBLICAN STRONGHOLDS IN ORANGE COUNTY

In his latest article, Frank Stoltze interviews OC GOP Chair Will O’Neill and me to examine how Proposition 50 could redraw Republican strongholds in Orange County. He also spotlights a promise I made should Prop 50 pass — putting me in an intriguing political spotlight. Someone will have to give me a number.

PAYING THE PRICE FOR SACRAMENTO’S GREEN POLITICS

My friend Matt Klink exposes how Sacramento’s green energy agenda collided with reality. After years of blaming “greedy oil companies,” Democrats are backpedaling as refinery closures, high prices, and public anger mount. It’s a sharp look at how political theater crumbles when the lights—and gas pumps—run dry.

Sacramento’s Green Politics Collided with Reality And Californians Paid the Price
For two years, California’s ruling class claimed that the villains at the pump were “profiteering” and “price gouging” oil companies. The Democrat super-majority, with Governor Newsom’s encouragement, held a special session, threatened “excess profit” caps, and vowed to control the industry. The national news media lapped it up…

DO THE FAR RIGHT AND THE FAR RIGHT MEET ON THE OTHER SIDE?

In The Populism Horseshoe, this column (with cool charts) shows how the far left and far right often meet in surprising ways. His piece highlights how extreme movements that claim to oppose each other end up sharing the same playbook.

Good Authority on Substack
The populism horseshoe
The horseshoe theory is a venerable idea about how political ideas work. The gist is that at the endpoints of the ideological spectrum, you start to find similarities. The spectrum “bends” like a horseshoe and the far left and far right suddenly look kind of alike – and maybe more similar to each other than they are to those in the political center…

This is something you should watch, and then share. The great Victor Davis Hansen, the subject of one of our California Patriot Profiles, on Prop. 50.

CRPA TV: GUN GROUPS STRIKE BACK - LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST CALIFORNIA’S GLOCK BAN

The latest from the California Rifle and Pistol Association’s great YouTube channel…

Show Notes: It’s been a massive week for the Second Amendment. The Supreme Court has officially taken up Wolford v. Lopez, a case out of Hawaii challenging their “sensitive places” law — and it could reshape how the Bruen decision is applied across the country.Meanwhile in California, Governor Gavin Newsom just signed Assembly Bill 1127, known as the “Glock Ban Bill,” sparking immediate lawsuits from Gun Groups.

WEST SIDE STORY IS RELEASED IN 1961

On this day in 1961, West Side Story premiered in U.S. theaters, revolutionizing movie musicals. Adapted from the 1957 Broadway hit by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, it reimagined Romeo and Juliet amid the gang rivalries of New York’s West Side. Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, the film dazzled audiences with groundbreaking choreography, lush music, and social commentary on race and youth. Starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno, and George Chakiris, it won 10 Academy Awards—including Best Picture—and remains a landmark in American cinema for blending powerful storytelling, dynamic dance, and cinematic innovation. This class is a must-watch and is available on the expected places for streaming (the $4 is so worth it!).
