 CHAMPION MESSAGE

"A new entitlement to paid leave would come with substantial costs. Particularly in light of the current economic crisis, policymakers should be wary of imposing such costs on struggling businesses and families."

HURTING NOT HELPING

If Only Woke Protesters Knew How Close They Were to Meaningful Police Reform

Shamelessly denying Republicans the 60 votes needed to openly debate a GOP-proposed police reform bill, Senate Democrats stripped Americans of the opportunity to pass meaningful reforms for an issue that’s turned the nation upside down. The vote, which occurred two weeks ago, provides further evidence that the ongoing riots and protests aren’t about George Floyd or police reform. They’re about control. The media will bend over backwards to spin this story, but let's be clear: It's Democrats who just destroyed our best hope for bipartisan reform. If only woke protestors knew that the opportunity for change was in their hands, and it was Democrats who closed the door.

Universal Licensure Continues to Be Adopted by More States

Earlier this month, Iowa passed occupational licensing reform legislation granting universal recognition of out-of-state licenses. Idaho also passed legislation recognizing out-of-state job licenses for applicants who meet most of the requirements of the Idaho license. Both of these states join the growing ranks of states that recognize how different occupational licensing requirements between states can make it difficult for individuals to move. While these reforms are a step forward, more must be done to help workers.

Education in the Time of COVID

We certainly don’t love living through a pandemic and all the related fallout. Part of the fallout was universal school closures.

Can you identify which of the following statements about education in the time of COVID is not true?

A:  Most schools delivered online instruction during the period from late March until the end of the school year.
B:  Schools proved more effective at delivering social services than education during the pandemic.
C:  If families are dissatisfied with how their districts have handled the crisis, or the content their children are learning, many states have alternative options available.

Women, Feminist Groups Just Aren’t That Into You Anymore

The National Organization for Women emailed supporters urging them to help pass the Equality Act. They explained the legislation made “more sense than ever” given a recent Supreme Court ruling and the pressing need to ensure that LGBTQIA+ people are protected from all forms of discrimination. Set aside, for a moment, the merits of their proposal to consider that nowhere in the body of the 500+ word email alert does the word “women” appear. Is this supposedly feminist group, once a stalwart of the “women’s rights” movement, now uncomfortable even with the word women? The safe bet is... yes.

If Schools Don’t Open in the Fall, Funds Should Follow the Child

With parents and students frustrated with this spring’s remote education challenges and teachers wary about returning to classrooms, states and school districts are reluctant to definitively announce plans for educating public school students this fall. Districts have declared that they absolutely must receive more funding in order to reopen. Parents can take control of their children’s educational future. To ensure education funding follows the child, rather than an inflexible and unreliable education system, parents should demand access to their child’s education funds, and support state and local policies that allow parents to use the funding earmarked for their child’s education.

Pennsylvania Is Helping Former Convicts Get Back to Work

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf recently signed a bill that will remove barriers for skilled workers to find steady employment. This law is an important step toward occupations for many former convicts. Some prison programs have provided excellent opportunities for individuals to gain skills that they can use to find steady work after their release. But they are frequently blocked from that work due to occupational licensing laws, which do not allow for criminal records, even if the record is not at all related to the work that the individuals would be performing.
