President Trump’s Most Important Speech

President Donald Trump’s speech at Mount Rushmore may be the most important and historic speech of his career. If he continues to echo and reinforce the message of this profound speech, he will become as essential to the preservation of freedom in America for the 21st century as President Abraham Lincoln was in the 19th century and President Ronald Reagan was in the 20th century.
Not since Reagan has a president laid out the core values that make America free – and stood defiantly in defense of those values despite the ridicule and hostility of the elites, news media, academics, and his political opponents.
President Reagan was focused on defending freedom from foreign threats – the Soviet Union and international communism. Reagan had a conversation in the late1940s over drinks with a Screen Actors Guild member who proclaimed himself a Stalinist. The actor said if the Stalinists won, Reagan would be imprisoned or shot. After this experience, the future president decided the Communist threat was real. He dedicated his life to defending freedom and defeating communism. Some four decades later, the Soviet Union disappeared. Over the course of this battle, Reagan’s speeches came back to the theme of freedom again and again.
President Trump has clearly had a similar epiphany. His Mount Rushmore speech was the clearest statement against a domestic threat to American freedom ever given by a modern national leader.
When President Trump said, “Our nation is witnessing a merciless campaign to wipe out our history, defame our heroes, erase our values, and indoctrinate our children, ” he was guaranteeing the further bitter hostility of the propaganda media, which has replaced the news media.

President Trump: History Teacher and Statue Builder

To my surprise (and I suspect virtually everyone’s surprise) President Donald Trump is carving a place in history as a teacher and statue builder. This was a major outcome of his extraordinarily powerful speech at Mount Rushmore on July 3.
In many ways, President Trump is responding to President Ronald Reagan’s Farewell Address in which he said:
“But now we’re about to enter the nineties, and some things have changed. Younger parents aren’t sure that an unambivalent appreciation of America is the right thing to teach modern children. And as for those who create the popular culture, well-grounded patriotism is no longer the style.
“Our spirit is back, but we haven’t reinstitutionalized it. We’ve got to do a better job of getting across that America is freedom – freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of enterprise – and freedom is special and rare. It’s fragile; it needs protection.
“We’ve got to teach history based not on what’s in fashion but what’s important…. If we forget what we did, we won’t know who we are. I am warning of an eradication of that – of the American memory that could result, ultimately, in an erosion of the American spirit.
“Let’s start with some basics – more attention to American history and a greater emphasis of civic ritual.”

The Anti-Fascist Fascists

No word in the English language is weaponized more freely and recklessly by people who don’t know what it means than “fascism.” As George Orwell observed in 1946, the word “fascism” has “now no meaning except in so far as it signifies ‘something not desirable.’” And, as Jonah Goldberg noted in his book, Liberal Fascism, the word “fascist” has basically come to mean a heretic “worthy of excommunication from the body politic.” In other words, “fascist” is the ultimate political slur, branding someone as “the other,” “the undesirable,” someone who is evil and must be punished for his sins.
