Impact Of The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act On Obesity Trends

The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 established policies to improve the nutritional quality of food served through subsidized and free breakfast and lunch programs. Using national data from the period 2003–18, Erica Kenney and coauthors estimate the extent to which childhood obesity trends were affected by the law. For children in poverty the odds of having obesity increased each year leading up to the law but began decreasing after its implementation. Read More >>

A CLOSER LOOK—Peer Comparisons

Policy makers are increasingly using performance feedback that compares physicians to their peers as part of payment policy reforms. However, it is not known whether peer comparisons can improve broad outcomes, beyond changing specific individual behaviors such as reducing inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics. In Health Affairs, Amol S. Navathe and coauthors wrote about a cluster-randomized controlled trial conducted with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Hawaii to examine the impact of providing peer comparisons feedback on the quality of care to primary care providers in the setting of a shift from fee-for-service to population-based payment.
