For 24 years, I taught at Heath Junior High School in Greeley. I know that when politicians in Washington take an ax to the Department of Education’s budget, the effects don’t just impact federal employees—we feel those cuts right here at home.

To the Trump administration, special education programs are just numbers on a page. To them, that money could be used to help cover tax breaks for the 1% and multi-billion-dollar corporations. They don’t care that these programs help nurture and protect our most vulnerable students.
Well, I do. As a former teacher and the brother of someone with severe cognitive and behavioral disabilities, I know how vital these programs are. I’ve watched my sister Dorothy face challenges most of us can’t imagine—challenges made worse when the systems meant to support her are hollowed out by budget cuts and political games. That’s why I’m running for office.
