[link removed] [[link removed]] Here’s the truth, John: our healthcare system is a mess. Healthcare costs are already too high, and it's about to get way worse.

Millions of Americans are getting notices that their monthly insurance premiums are about to double. Here’s what we know about prices for people buying Pennie plans (our ACA market in Pennsylvania): In Allegheny County, premiums will jump an average of $137 a month. In Beaver County, $125. And if Congress lets the ACA tax credits expire, 267,000 of my fellow veterans will lose their health coverage.

This comes at a time when we have some of the most expensive healthcare in the world with worse outcomes than many other countries, and when hardworking people are getting pounded by high costs.

Let's be clear. Republicans shut down the government and they refused to work with Democrats to clean up this healthcare mess they made.

Washington Republicans managed to make our healthcare crisis worse with their Medicaid cuts and inaction on the Affordable Care Act—and they chose to shut down the government rather than work to fix the crisis that they caused.

Now, because of their inaction, health insurers are jacking up premiums—anticipating that key tax credits could expire. That means even higher bills for working people. And if Republicans in Congress continue to hold up action, 4 million people could lose their health insurance.

That means people could go bankrupt trying to afford life-saving care or prescriptions they need to survive—and Americans will be sicker and worse off than before.

And here’s the thing: the majority of Americans— including Republicans! —agree those tax credits should stay. Because it’s just common sense.
