Hi there,
We’re now three weeks into the government shutdown, with the next vote to
reopen scheduled for Monday, October 20th. If the shutdown lasts that
long, it will rank among the longest in U.S. history—and it’s already
hurting workers and families across the country.
Here’s an update on where things stand:
* After ten failed Senate votes to reopen the government, Republicans
still won’t come to the table to negotiate Affordable Care Act (ACA)
subsidies used by over 20 million people—and Democrats won’t budge
until there is a solution to stop health care costs from spiking next
year.
* Speaker Mike Johnson is still refusing to bring the House back into
session to pass a compromise bill, even though that’s the only way to
end the shutdown.
* Federal workers received only partial paychecks last Friday for the
days worked before the shutdown—and won’t see any more pay until it’s
over.
* Trump is trying to permanently lay off 4,000 furloughed federal
workers, including workers in the Department of Education’s special
education and civil rights enforcement offices. A judge blocked his
plan for now, but it’s unclear how long that protection will last.
The damage from this shutdown is already clear—and it’s a result of Trump
and his allies controlling Congress with no reason to compromise. But we
have a clear opportunity to take back power.

For the past 30 years, every government shutdown has begun with
Republicans in control of the House. As long as they’re in power, they’ll
keep slashing lifelines for the working class to pay for tax breaks for
the rich—even if it means their own voters can’t afford the care they
need.
This is
exactly why Swing Left is going all in to flip the House to Democrats in
2026. We’re not waiting until next fall—we’re already organizing in 22
competitive swing districts to give Democrats the best possible chance of
winning a majority.
Our Ground Truth program is central to that work. It’s a new approach to
canvassing where we listen to voters (instead of lecturing!), understand
what’s motivating them, and use those insights to strengthen House
campaigns across the country. By starting early, knocking every door, and
investing in better data and technology, we’ll give Democrats the
strategic edge needed to win back the majority next year.
We’re also focused on consequential races just around the corner, like
passing Proposition 50 in California to combat Republican gerrymandering,
and flipping the governorship and other key races in Virginia back to
Democrats.
