Fellow Utahns,
Utah’s system of representative government—where
the people elect those who make decisions on their behalf—is under
attack. Unelected activist efforts are working to take redistricting
power away from your elected legislators and place it in the hands of
unelected commissions and the courts. If successful, Utahns would lose
one of the most fundamental principles of our Republic: that those who
make our laws must answer to the voters who elect them.
To defend this core principle, the Utah Republican Party has
filed two measures with the Lieutenant Governor’s
Office:
-
A referendum to stop court-imposed maps that
disregard the Legislature’s constitutional role. (signatures due
Nov 18, target ~160,000)
-
An initiative to repeal Proposition 4—the 2018 law
that shifted Utah’s redistricting power away from accountable, elected
representatives. (signatures due Nov 15, target ~80,000)
These efforts are about protecting the right of Utahns to
be fairly represented, not about politics or partisanship.
But we are working under a short, court-imposed
timeline, and success will depend on thousands of Utahns
stepping forward—quickly—to help collect signatures and spread the
word.
To lead this effort, I established Utahns for
Representative Government (UFRG), a Political Issues
Committee working in partnership with the Utah Republican Party to
ensure Utah’s redistricting process remains transparent and
accountable to the people. You can learn more at UFRG.org.
