Email from Rep. Hinson Friend, I wanted to check in with you as we hit Day 17 of the Schumer Shutdown. Every business day the government is closed because of Democrats’ petty politics, taxpayers are forced to foot a $400 million bill. $400 million every single day – that’s crazy! The total cost of the Schumer Shutdown is topping $5.2 billion dollars while vital programs and troop pay are at risk. It is a disgrace. While Democrats chose to shut down the government over health care for illegal immigrants, my office has remained open and ready to serve. My team has been going the extra mile to follow up and update constituents on where their federal cases stand. In many instances, however, the employees at federal agencies have been furloughed or the agency isn’t able to respond because of the Schumer shutdown. When agency doors close and phone lines go unanswered, it’s not swamp bureaucrats who feel it; it’s everyday hardworking Americans who feel it — trying to fix a tax problem, recover retirement savings, or have their claim processed by the VA. A shutdown only leads to more delays, and each day the Democrats refuse to open the government, the casework backlog grows, and Iowans pay the price. Iowans are counting on us to help solve issues they face with federal agencies. I’m going to continue fighting to reopen the government for Iowa families. The Democrats’ madness must end. Sincerely, The Congressional App Challenge is Here! The Congressional App Challenge is a perfect opportunity for Iowa students interested in STEM and coding to showcase their talents and bring some of their ideas to life. I'd like to encourage any middle and high school students in my district to sign up! Students can design a computer, tablet, or phone app. The topic is up to them. A local panel will select the winner of this competition, who will then have the chance to be recognized alongside students throughout the country. Our kids are our future, and their literacy with these technologies shapes the world of tomorrow. Submission details can be found here – deadline is Thursday, October 30th. Team Hinson Welcomes VA Sec. Collins, International Delegation to Iowa Recently, my team welcomed Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins to Iowa and stopped by the Des Moines VA Central Iowa Health Care Center. It’s time for Senate Democrats to stop holding the government hostage so we can return to regular order and ensure our veterans receive the best possible care they deserve. I will continue fighting to ensure our military and veterans have the resources they need and their families are supported. If you or a veteran needs assistance, please contact our office. My team stands ready to help! My team also had the chance to meet with an international delegation of leaders through Global Ties Iowa. Our state is not only a global hub for ag production and research—it’s leading the next generation of innovation, strengthening international partnerships, and expanding trade so we can keep doing what we do best: feeding and fueling the world.
