Governor DeWine and ODNR Open New Marina and Nature Center at Buck Creek State Park
(COLUMBUS, Ohio)—Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Director Mary Mertz officially opened a new marina and nature center today at Buck Creek State Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Visitors can enjoy a new marina store, interactive and educational exhibits, and family-friendly activities in the modern facility.
“Ohio has the best state parks system in the nation, and people from all over come to enjoy what the Buckeye State has to offer,” said Governor DeWine. “I see our nature centers as the perfect place where people of all ages can learn something new about Ohio while they explore.”
The new marina includes a dedicated nature center that provides hands-on opportunities to learn about the park’s natural history and recreational offerings. The new concept stands on the site of the original marina store, which was demolished in 2024.
“This new facility is more than a marina, it’s a gathering place for families, anglers, and nature lovers,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “It reflects our commitment to providing modern, welcoming spaces where visitors can enjoy both the recreational and educational opportunities that make Buck Creek State Park so special.”
Interactive displays bring Buck Creek’s environment to life. Guests can try their hand at paddling a kayak, stand beside a mural showcasing life-size fish species found in the lake to see how they measure up with them, and even experience the sights and smells of the forest and wetlands.
The full-service marina store offers the same staples as before, such as bait, tackle, and fuel, alongside expanded amenities including hand-dipped ice cream and park souvenirs. Comfortable, modern restroom facilities and outdoor seating is available, giving guests more convenience and space to relax.
The marina and nature center add to the park’s existing amenities, which include camping, boating, fishing, hiking, and swimming, making Buck Creek a premier destination for outdoor adventure in central Ohio.
Recognized as the best state park system in America with the 2025 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management, the ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft provides exceptional outdoor recreation and boating opportunities by balancing outstanding customer service, education, and conservation of Ohio’s 76 state parks and waterways.
