MaineDOT Announces Upcoming Closures and Detours for the Western Avenue Bridge Project [ [link removed] ] 10/17/2025 03:43 PM EDT
AUGUSTA - The Maine Department of Transportation will be closing several roadway ramps and approaches in Augusta starting on October 20 through November 1. These closures are part of the bridge replacement and roadway rehabilitation project. The project work includes excavation, pavement milling, drainage installation, gravel installation, and electrical line installation. These closures are weather dependent, and dates may be subject to change. Drivers should expect delays and follow all posted detours and signage. From October 20 to October 23, Exit 109 eastbound on ramp for I-95 northbound and southbound will be closed. Drivers should follow detour signs to Fuller Road and Meadow Road to reverse direction onto I-95 for access to Western Avenue westbound. Trucks should follow detour signs to Senator Way to Crossing Way to reverse onto I-95 for Western Avenue westbound. During the detour, crews will keep the ramp open when there are no construction activities prohibiting ramp access. From October 24 to October 28, Whitten Road will be closed from Western Avenue to the traffic lights at Hannaford/Turnpike Mall. The right turn lane onto Whitten Road at the Turnpike Mall entrance eastbound will also be closed. Drivers heading to Whitten Road should use Edison Drive to Alderwood Drive. One eastbound lane and one westbound lane will remain open on the temporary bridge. On October 28, Whitten Road will reopen from Western Avenue to the Hannaford/Turnpike Mall traffic lights. The right turn lane onto Whitten Road will also reopen. Western Avenue traffic will be diverted to the new bridge, which will offer one lane eastbound and one lane westbound. From October 26 to November 1, Exit 109 northbound and southbound off ramps onto Western Avenue westbound will be closed. Drivers should follow detour signs to Fuller Road and Meadow Road to reverse direction. Trucks should follow Senator Way and Crossing Way to reverse direction. During this closure, one eastbound lane and one westbound lane will be open on the temporary bridge. On November 1, Exit 109 northbound and southbound off ramps onto Western Avenue westbound will reopen. The contractor for this project is Reed & Reed, and the contract amount is $30 million. body { font-size: 1em; font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: #333333; } ________________________________________________________________________
