John,
Right now, our federal government is shut down because Congress failed to do its most basic job: Pass a budget to keep our government programs fully funded.
Critical services like food assistance programs are being directly impacted. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers — including more than 20,000 right here in Kentucky — have been furloughed or are working without pay. And now, Donald Trump is directing federal agencies to start laying workers off.
Republicans and Democrats in Washington are negotiating over how to fund the government; specifically, they disagree over whether or not to lower health insurance premiums for American families. That negotiation has led to the government shutting down. But it did not lead to workers being fired. If the President chooses to fire federal employees, that is because he and he alone chose to do so. People are not props, and the President of the United States shouldn’t be treating them that way.
I've met workers and their families across the Commonwealth who are affected by this shutdown. They're our neighbors, our friends, and our family members. They're the people who keep our communities safe, our air clean, our food inspected, and our borders secure.
This shutdown shows some of the worst parts of our politics — from a refusal to negotiate to find a solution that works for the American people, to the Trump Administration’s willingness to use people as bargaining chips in order to try to win a negotiation.
We need leaders who care about their people, and who will put the people they represent over the party they’re registered with.
That's why I started In This Together PAC in the first place: To elect leaders who will fight for the American people, not use them as leverage. Leaders who know that governing means solving problems, not creating new ones. If you're as fed up with the dysfunction in Washington as I am, I'm asking you to chip in whatever you can right now to help us elect for-the-people leaders who will put this country back on track. >> [link removed]
Thank you,
Andy
