It’s day 17 of the Republican shutdown, and I have to tell you, the consequences of this one are truly stark. If Republicans continue to refuse to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies, premiums could more than double for people buying insurance on the marketplace.
Republicans started this shutdown, and they could end it—but instead, they’re playing political games with the health care of more than twenty million Americans.
And it’s just not okay. Every time Republicans pull these stunts, American families are the ones who suffer.
Senator Richard Blumenthal put it plainly this week “People can’t get sick on Donald Trump’s timetable.” He’s right. You can’t schedule cancer screenings around a government shutdown. Kids don’t stop getting ear infections because Republicans refuse to come to the table.
Families need certainty now.
That’s why Democrats are standing firm in this fight. And your CT Senators are committed to voting only for a budget that protects health care, extends ACA subsidies, and keeps coverage affordable for the people who need it most.
Senator Chris Murphy said after Thursday’s tenth failed vote, “I’m going to fight to make sure any budget I vote for at least curbs the lawlessness, slows destruction of democracy, and helps the people of my state.”
