John,
The Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) just hit 60 cosponsors in the Senate.1 Proponents of this dangerous censorship bill just keep dragging it forward, flouting repeated warnings from digital rights and LGBTQ+ advocates that it would give the Trump administration unprecedented power to police our speech online.2
This threat has always loomed large, but it just got way more real. With 60 cosponsors in the Senate, KOSA is now immune to a filibuster, or vote delay, bringing us even closer to a reality where Trump’s FTC gets to decide what content we see online. That means we have to fight even harder to ensure KOSA never gets to a vote in either house of Congress.
Can you rush a donation to the Stop KOSA campaign today? Every dollar funds rapid response efforts to turn misguided lawmakers off the path of online censorship.
STOP KOSA
We’re mobilizing thousands of young people and their allies to call Congress and educate members on the Hill about what a safe Internet actually looks like. It looks like passing comprehensive privacy legislation to protect everyone’s sensitive data and cracking down on Big Tech monopolies that are gobbling up and enshittifying our favorite platforms. It’s certainly not giving unilateral power to a fascist administration to censor any topics—especially abortion and LGBTQ+ speech3—that they deem “inappropriate” for children. That’s what KOSA in its current form would do.
We expect the House Committee on Energy and Commerce to hold a hearing on KOSA and other “kids safety” bills soon—and we plan on making sure that every lawmaker in the room knows how privacy and free speech advocates, LGBTQ+ communities, parents against censorship, and more at-risk groups feel about passing censorship bills at a time like this. We’ll be especially sure that the House Democrats who are “committed”1 to the duty of care provision that spikes the most censorship concerns face the constituents they are falling over themselves to disappoint.
We need a free Internet to find community, solidarity, and life-saving information now more than ever. With your support, we’ve beat KOSA before,4 and we’ll do it again.
Please consider making a gift of any size today to stop this dangerous bill before it comes to a vote.
