Government Shutdown
On October 1st, Republicans—who hold the majority in the House, Senate, and White House—allowed government funding to expire, forcing essential programs and services to shut down.
Now, they continue to play political games instead of working with Democrats to reopen the government and lower health care costs for South Texans.
I am committed to lowering the cost of health care and working with my colleagues across the aisle to ensure Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits, which make healthcare more affordable, do not expire at the end of the year. Rest assured that my offices remain open, and my staff and I are still here working for you.
Recently, I asked South Texans how this shutdown and allowing these tax credits to expire would affect them. The results were striking:
- 96.11% of people said they were concerned about rising health insurance premiums
- 68% of people said they could not afford to keep their insurance if premiums increase $420 a year
These numbers paint a stark picture—too many families are already struggling to make ends meet, and any disruption to affordable health care would place a great financial strain on so many of our friends and neighbors.
We also heard directly from South Texans on how the tax credits have helped them:

Stories like these show exactly what’s at stake for our region. I want to continue hearing from you. Please share your experiences here.
