Friend, you’re probably starting to wonder just how long this government shutdown is going to last.
I know I am. I’ve been in Washington this week, doing my job as a representative of working class Bay Staters and voting against huge increases to Americans’ health care costs.
In fact, Senate Republicans have brought their disastrous Affordable Care Act cuts to a vote 10 times now, and each time I have voted No.
Meanwhile, Speaker Mike Johnson has sent House Republicans home. They’re nowhere to be found in the halls of Congress today, which is as sure of a sign as ever that Trump and Republicans are still unwilling to negotiate a new budget plan that protects Americans from skyrocketing healthcare costs.
So once again, here is my message to Republicans in Congress: Come back to DC, negotiate in good faith, give a damn about your fellow Americans, and pass a real budget that can reopen our government.
And time really is of the essence, because If Trump and Republicans let this shutdown drag on through the end of October, we are going to start seeing even more devastating consequences for the American people — and the blame will lay squarely on Republicans for refusing to compromise.
I don’t know how this shutdown will end, but I know one thing: I’m not going to sell out on working class Americans just because the GOP refuses to negotiate.
We can and must hold the line to prevent out of control health care costs that will kick millions off their plans and force folks to choose between going to the doctor or making ends meet.
In solidarity,
Ed Markey
