ACLU Supporter, with your help, the ACLU is rejecting authoritarianism.
We're working to protect our rights and freedoms – on the streets, in state houses across the country, in Congress, and in the courts. And as the Trump administration continues attempting to send troops and armed federal agents into states, we're ramping up our work to challenge and block these threats to our communities.
Here are some highlights in our work to keep troops off our streets:
- The ACLU filed a brief supporting California's case against President Trump's deployment of National Guard troops and active-duty Marines to Los Angeles. A district judge agreed that this military action was illegal, but the government appealed. Our brief underscores our country's history, tradition, and laws that limit the use of the military to police the American people, and details how troop deployment puts our rights to free speech and association at risk. Protest is part of the fabric of our free society – and federal troops must never be used to silence free speech.
- The ACLU of D.C. filed a brief supporting the District's lawsuit against President Trump's deployment of National Guard troops to D.C. The brief argues that sending American troops into D.C. makes residents less safe and denies D.C. residents the right to self-governance. In addition, the ACLU has collected over 80,000 messages to Congress demanding that our representatives pass D.C. statehood so a federal takeover like this is never possible again in our nation's capital.
- Since President Trump first started deploying troops into cities across the country, ACLU supporters have sent over 380,000 messages to Congress urging them to condemn this abuse of power and get troops off our streets. We've shown the strength of our community and will keep this pressure up until these attacks on our rights stop.
- We've consulted our experts and put together a guide about what actions actually work to hold the Trump administration accountable and protect our democracy – from congressional calls to peaceful protests. Check it out to see how you can make the most impact in fighting for our rights!
The power of the people is stronger than any abuse from the Trump administration – and we'll keep proving that in every state and in every setting.
Thanks for all you do to fuel this work,
The ACLU Team
