At first, Mary Alice’s mom, Laurie, thought the bruises on her daughter’s legs were from childhood playtime. The bloodwork was supposed to be just a precaution. But the minute they got home from the pediatrician, the doctor phoned and sent them straight to the hospital.  

The next three months were filled with painful tests, bloodwork and transfusions as doctors searched for answers. Finally, Mary Alice was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder requiring a bone marrow transplant.

The transplant was successful, but recovery meant seven weeks in the hospital. Then, four MORE months of living near the hospital, far from home and away from her siblings. After that, frequent hospital clinic visits would be needed for almost another year.

Through it all, one thing remained constant – Mary Alice’s love of horses. After talking to her wish granters, the decision was clear – to visit a dude ranch in Colorado and experience the joy of riding a real horse.

As she stood still, several more horses surrounded her, showing unusual, gentle interest. “We got teary-eyed,” Laurie recalled. “She didn’t have any treats.
