Cllr Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, has shared a heartfelt message during National Hate Crime Awareness Week, reminding residents of the importance of standing together.
She spoke with pride about the town’s rich mix of communities and said Oldham is at its best when people stand side by side, supporting one another and showing kindness.

Don’t miss out – final days to apply for grants of up to £20,000
Oldham Council is encouraging local community groups, schools and charities to apply now for the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) Community Fund before the Monday 27 October deadline.
The £250,000 fund offers grants up to £20,000 to help create or improve community spaces and facilities.
TRU recently visited Support and Action for Women’s Network (SAWN), an Oldham-based charity that supports Black and Asian minority ethnic women.
The TRU Community Fund helped create a new community cabin at SAWN’s Chadderton allotment site.
Councillor Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, said: “Community organisations like SAWN do incredible work supporting local people, and it’s wonderful to see how TRU funding has enhanced their facilities. I encourage other eligible groups in Oldham and across the route to apply before the deadline.”
Applications can be submitted via the TRU Community Fund campaign page at [www.thetrupgrade.co.uk/communityfund.]([link removed].)

Keep it clean, keep it cosy this season
A well-maintained stove and chimney don’t just keep you warm — they keep your home safer, cleaner, and more efficient.
Get your chimney swept once a year and have your stove checked and cleaned regularly.
Doing so helps to produce more heat, reduces pollution and saves money in the long-run.
