Hi John,
With a fragile ceasefire agreement now in place in Gaza, we are all hoping there will be some respite for Palestinians who have endured two years of barbaric attacks and the destruction of their homeland. But even if this deal holds, this is just the starting point in the struggle for justice for Palestinians.
Fundamentally, any plan that seeks to achieve peace and justice must address the very foundation of the violence in the region, which is Israel’s decades-long occupation of the Palestinian territory. The risk now is that Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank continue to face grinding violence and erasure, but with even less international pressure on Israel.
It was decades of economic, diplomatic and military support from countries like the UK that helped to normalise Israel’s oppression of the Palestinian people, demonstrating that it would face no consequences. That cycle of destruction and impunity must end.
But as negotiations over the final shape of the agreement continue, the plan proposed by Donald Trump resembles something from the 19th century in which the richest country in the world imposes a deeply inappropriate and colonial form of government on the victims of Israel's genocide. (1)
There is no mention of the future of the West Bank, even as Israel accelerates illegal settlement building and annexation of Palestinian land, including a plan for a new settlement which would split the already fragmented West Bank in half. (2) Meanwhile, the regime which carried out this genocide is still in place and faces no prospect of accountability.
Keir Starmer’s government would like the ‘problem’ of public outrage at UK complicity in genocide to go away after the ceasefire. Because in the last two years, a huge movement for Palestine has mobilised effectively, forcing the UK government to suspend some weapons sales and stop trade talks with Israel.
But we won't go away. As a movement we now must deepen our resolve, maintain our focus and make sure our government doesn’t let Israel off the hook. As long as Israel’s brutal occupation continues – and to be sure, its leaders are moving to deepen and intensify it – our call for sanctions remains.
We will continue to demand, at a minimum, an end to all trade that supports the illegal occupation, including arms sales and settlement trade, and the suspension of the UK’s trade deal with Israel.
While we all hope that the genocide against Palestinians now ends, we must ensure that this ceasefire is just the start of a path to freedom and justice for Palestinians. Thank you for everything you have been doing. Let’s keep going.
