John, before I ask you to chip in ahead of my climate PAC’s critical deadline tonight, I wanted to tell you about something I just read on CNN, because I can’t stop thinking about it.

“The planet is grappling with a ‘new reality’ as it reaches the first in a series of catastrophic and potentially irreversible climate tipping points: the widespread death of coral reefs.”

When I read those words, my heart sank. I’ve spent much of my life scuba diving over coral reefs, watching the dazzling colors, the life teeming below the surface. Our oceans are the beating heart of this planet. And if our oceans die, we die with them.

The window of opportunity to prevent mass extinction is closing fast, and we can’t afford to have leaders in power who ignore the science or bow to fossil fuel interests. We need government officials who will respond to this crisis — not aid and abet it, like we’ve seen Donald Trump and his cronies do at the federal level.

That’s why we’ve stepped up to help elect over 160 climate champions, from school boards to city councils to Congress — because we know they’ll meet this moment with the urgency it needs and the real change we deserve.
