Friend,
Two years of relentless violence, aid blockages and forced displacement have spiraled Gaza into a catastrophic health and hunger crisis. Even as a ceasefire is in effect, the health situation remains dire. Children are starving and dying of malnutrition, health facilities have been destroyed and there’s no reliable access to clean water.
Here are three things you should know about the situation in Gaza today:
-
Famine has been confirmed: More than 500,000 people are facing starvation while truckloads of food, medicine and relief supplies from humanitarian organizations remain stuck at the border.
-
The health care system in Gaza has collapsed: There are no fully functioning hospitals to treat the population of over 2 million people. More than 42,000 people have suffered life-changing injuries and at least 15,600 people need to be evacuated for medical treatment.
-
Americares is still responding: Right now, we are continuing to fund a mother and child clinic that can provide lifesaving care for 4,000 displaced women and children each month – including treatment for acute malnutrition, trauma and breastfeeding counseling. We’ve delivered 35 tons of essential medicine and medical supplies since October 2023, including enough medicine to fill over 350,000 prescriptions. We are ready to mobilize 12 tons of medical aid as soon as border access improves.
