Dear friends,
Since my last newsletter, our state and nation have endured yet more heartbreaking acts of gun violence. Like so many of you, I have struggled to find words in the face of such senseless loss. The truth is, this violence doesn’t spare anyone. It touches all of us, young and old, people whose names we know and people we don’t.
We cannot allow these tragedies to become routine. It is not enough to mourn; we must also act. We're hearing that from the families of victims and communities impacted by gun violence. It’s clear that people are tired of this violence and want solutions.
I remain committed to working with my colleagues and community members to keep our kids safe and advance common-sense, practical solutions that can prevent senseless deaths.
To that end, I joined Governor Walz and Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy in putting forward a detailed proposal [ [link removed] ] focused on gun violence and school safety. It includes meaningful action on weapons of war as well as bipartisan proposals on school safety, additional mental health resources, and new funding for law enforcement.
We’ve made progress to protect Minnesotans from gun violence, including expanded criminal background checks, red flag laws, and strengthened threat reporting. We know these measures are already saving lives, but it’s not enough. There’s more we have to do to keep weapons of war out of our communities. We’ve taken numerous steps to strengthen mental health services and improve school safety, and we’re prepared to do more, but right now the question is whether our Republican colleagues will join us in listening to what Minnesotans are calling for and take meaningful action to prevent gun violence. So far, the answer is sadly no, but we’re not going to give up on this. We’ll keep pushing for as long as it takes.

An Update on My Role at the Capitol
I’m honored to have been chosen by my colleagues in the Minnesota House DFL to serve as our caucus leader. This is a responsibility I don’t take lightly.
This change comes after the assassination of my friend, Melissa Hortman. She was an incredible Speaker of the House, leader, strategist, colleague, and friend. She’s truly irreplaceable. While I’ve been chosen to step into this role, I know it will take all of us working together to move Minnesota forward and keep building a state where everyone can thrive.
We are still grieving this transition, but I feel confident in our shared strength and the work we’ll continue to do together.
High School Page and Undergraduate Internship Programs
Are you a high school junior or college student interested in the Minnesota Legislature? Consider applying to the 2026 House High School Page Program or the Undergraduate Internship Program! It’s a great way to get an up-close look at how a bill advances out of committee, passes during a House Floor session, and becomes a law. There are also ample opportunities to participate in research and policy.
